Mycoplasma hyorhinis swine arthritis.

چکیده
The belief that rheumatoid arthritis may be of infectious origin has led us to studies of mycoplasmal arthritidies of swine as a potential animal model (1). In parallel with the previously reported study of Mycoplasma hyorhinis arthritis in conventional Yorkshire swine, a pilot study of the disease in a miniature strain of swine was undertaken on the grounds that a susceptible miniature breed would facilitate subsequent expanded investigations of the process. This report details our observations on experimentally infected and control miniature swine of the Piney Woods strain. In striking contrast to Yorkshire swine, a chronic arthritis was not induced in the miniatures, thus emphasizing previously recognized breed differences in the biological response to M. hyorhinis infection (W. P. Switzer, personal communication) and calling to mind the vague concepts of "genetic susceptibility" that have been discussed in reference to rheumatoid arthritis (3).

Mycoplasma hyorhinis swine arthritis. 3. Modified disease in Piney Woods swine.
Piney Woods miniature swine, when injected with Mycoplasma hyorhinis, develop an acute arthritis. The disease in these animals is limited clinically, microbiologically, and pathologically to a mild acute illness without the more chronic and destructive features noted in a previous study of the experimental disease in Yorkshire swine.

Swine mycoplasmas are acknowledged for their potential to contribute to several swine disease complexes. In addition, mycoplasma-associated arthritis has recently been recognized as a re-emergent issue in the swine industry. Reports from Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories suggest an increasing incidence of cases occurring in the major regions of swine production in the U.S. Although previous st...
متن کاملMycoplasmas and arthritis.
At least 13 mycoplasma species cause arthritis in animals. In some cases it remains chronic, and in particular Mycoplasma hyorhinis in swine and Mycoplasma synoviae in poultry clinically and histologically resemble rheumatoid arthritis in man. Of patients with serologically verified Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections 0.9% had arthritis. Usually it is mild, but may sometimes be the dominant clinic...

متن کاملImmune Responsiveness in Swine: Eight Generations of Selection
Pigs were bred for 8 generations for high (H) , low (L) and control (C) immune responsiveness using estimated breeding values (EBV) of antibody (Ab) and cell-mediated immune responses (CMIR). Response to selection was determined by differences in least squares means and average EBV between the H and L lines. Lines diverged steadily between generations 1 to 3 (Gl-G3); however, there was little o...
